Paris Île-de-France Living lab

The Paris Île-de-France Living Lab studies Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as applied to urban areas in the Île-de-France region, from its suburban fringes to its dense urban centers. Their design and implementation are evaluated in terms of their contribution to ecological connectivity across multiple scales.

Priority scientific questions

The Paris Île-de-France Living Lab’s activities are structured around four key questions, which will be addressed and followed up with a series of actions:

  1. What are the drivers of biodiversity dynamics under the constraints of climate change and its regulation, in relation to urban land management?
  2. What intervention scenarios are likely to address the challenges of biodiversity and climate change, and what role will the NbS play in them?
  3. What are the benefits and costs of NbS for city dwellers in terms of their standard of living and quality of life?
  4. What conditions must be met for a policy supporting NbS in urban areas to succeed?

The methodological aspects of the living lab

The Paris Île-de-France Living Lab follows these general methodological guidelines:

  1. Collect and analyze field data to develop projections of ecological and social parameters in preparation for the deployment of NbS
  2. Analyze the synergies and trade-offs among different NbS to enhance their benefits for biodiversity dynamics, climate change adaptation, and socio-ecological outcomes
  3. Developing tools to inform science-based decision-making
