Evaluation of the performance of NbS
Action 7
Assess the performance of Nature-based Solutions in a systemic way
Led by INRAE and co-led by the CNRS, this action will support the study of the effectiveness of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in terms of both scientific and socio-economic outcomes. It will focus in particular on the synergies and trade-offs between these objectives. The SOLU-BIOD program will work on the mechanisms that support the implementation of networks of local NbS (“scaling out”) and their integration into larger-scale policies (“scaling up”), by analyzing the complementarities among different NbS at broader scales.
This SOLU-BIOD action will be supported and guided by a group of experts – composed of researchers (in ecology, geography, economics, etc.) and societal actors. They will help identify priority research questions to assess the performance of NbS and the conditions for their large-scale deployment. These research questions will inform the program’s governance, which will prepare in 2025 a call for projects addressing this scientific challenge. They will also lead to the establishment of a dedicated working group, a knowledge hub, which will focus on syntheses and meta-analyses on these topics.
Analyze the mechanisms that enable or constrain their scaling up and deployment
This action will build on previous work that initiated the comparison and networking of NbS across France, notably those carried out by IUCN France, the Life ARTISAN project, and the Nature 2050 initiative of CDC Biodiversité. Ultimately, it will aim to identify opportunities and propose guidance for the deployment of NbS across the country.
